Canter Zoom is a male human who appears in the Equestria Girls film Legend of Everfree and the half-hour specials Movie Magic and Mirror Magic. He is a filmmaking director and Juniper Montage's uncle.

Design and development[]

Canter Zoom has a similar color scheme to Sandalwood and Timber Spruce. He was modeled after the since-deceased filmmaker and writer George A. Romero.[1]

Depiction in Equestria Girls[]

Equestria Girls: Legend of Everfree[]

Canter Zoom first appears near the end of the Equestria Girls film Legend of Everfree. During the Rainbooms' performance of Legend You Were Meant To Be, he appears enjoying the Crystal Gala fundraiser to save Camp Everfree, with Muffins briefly dancing next to him. Canter also appears in the background during a tender moment between Twilight Sparkle and Timber Spruce.

Equestria Girls: Movie Magic[]

In the half-hour special Movie Magic, Canter Zoom appears in a more prominent role as the director of a Daring Do film. He invites the Mane Seven onto the film studio lot to see the movie's production as thanks for saving Camp Everfree. Unfortunately, his job is made exceedingly difficult by Rainbow Dash's over-excitement, the disappearance of a handful of important film supplies and props, the apparent sabotage of a film set, and the impending expiration of star actress Chestnut Magnifico's film contract.

Through the Mane Seven's investigation, the culprit behind the movie prop thefts and set sabotage is revealed to be Canter Zoom's niece and production assistant Juniper Montage, though Canter doesn't believe it at first. After Twilight explains Juniper's scheme and motives and Juniper subsequently confesses, Canter forgives Juniper because they're family, but he fires her and bans her from the movie studio.

Equestria Girls: Mirror Magic[]

In the follow-up half-hour special Mirror Magic, Juniper bitterly tells the Mane Seven that, after she was fired from her job at the movie studio, her uncle Canter Zoom got her a new job as a movie theater usher in the Canterlot Mall. Canter Zoom also briefly appears when Sunset Shimmer uses her magical geode powers to read Juniper's thoughts, showing that he is still angry with his niece for almost ruining his movie.

Other depictions[]

Storybooks[]

Canter appears in the novelization of the specials, Magic, Magic Everywhere!, his role essentially unchanged from the specials.

Personality[]

In his appearance in Movie Magic, Canter Zoom is portrayed as easygoing yet straight-laced; he is generous enough to invite Twilight, Sunset, and their friends to the movie studio, but he displays little patience for Rainbow Dash's excitability and disruptive outbursts. As the special goes on, however, Canter becomes more and more stressed by the mishaps and setbacks happening around his studio, to the point where he briefly considers halting all film production.
